Is Organizing a Competitive Industry?

I get asked a lot if I am able to keep busy as a Professional Organizer, especially with having other Organizers in the Peterborough area with me. The answer is YES!! Curious about how that is? Read on.

1. Organizing is not competitive. In the 2016 census, it was calculated that Peterborough-Kawarthas area had over 120,000 citizens. And I know less than 10 Professional Organizers personally who service this area regularly (though I’m sure there are a few more). I’ll let you do the math, but basically it’s a LOT of people per Organizer, even if only a fraction of them are messy – and we know it’s a bit more than that! I think we all know someone who is messy and could use an Organizer!

2. We have different niches. There are so many different areas that Organizers can tackle and specialize in: senior moves and downsizing; time management and productivity; aesthetic organizing; minimalism; working with people who have ADHD, Autism, Hoarding Disorder, and/or PTSD; photo organizing; young families with children; businesses and SO MUCH MORE! You need to find the best Organizer to suit your needs.

3. We all have different personalities. Even if you find two or more organizers who specialize in the same thing, you probably wouldn’t want to work with both of them equally. You need to find the person that you connect with and trust to go through your confidential paperwork, or your underwear drawer! Organizing is an intimate process, and you should hire someone that you trust fully. Most of us do an initial assessment at the beginning, so you can ask questions and get a sense of our personality/approach before we officially start.

4. It’s good to have someone impartial. You may have a friend that is an Organizer, but even though you trust them, they may not be the best match for you! Sometimes there is too much history and emotion there to have it be as effective as it is with someone impartial.

What has been preventing you from hiring an Organizer?

One of the myths of what we do is that we throw out all of your stuff, but that is not the case (with most of us anyway…)! When I work with clients, I give suggestions and ask leading questions, but all of the decisions are made by my clients. They are adults, and it is their stuff!

If you want to learn a little bit more about how I work with my clients, and what makes me different from other Organizers, check out my blog Why I Am NOT the Organizer For You!

And of course, feel free to reach out at any time with questions or to book an assessment!
